Australian Doctors Orchestra Bendigo bound

Thursday, March 23, 2017

A symphony orchestra made up of more than 80 doctors from around the country, will perform its first ever Bendigo concert at Ulumbarra Theatre this April.

Event organiser and Bendigo-based Orthopaedic surgical specialist, Dr Travis Perera, said the event was a unique national assembly of talented medical professionals, “The Australian Doctors Orchestra is made up of specialist doctors, general practitioners and medical students from around Australia who perform together in a number of concerts annually.

“We are fortunate enough that this performance will be conducted by internationally acclaimed conductor, Warwick Steng√•rds, and feature talented cellist, Michael Dahlenburg. There is no doubt this will be a brilliant concert, and one that we are fortunate enough to have presented here in Bendigo.” Dr Perera said.

The event will also feature the Bendigo Youth Choir, who have been invited to perform at New York’s Carnegie Hall this June. Founder and Artistic Director of the Bendigo Youth Choir, Mrs Valerie Broad said the group’s involvement provided valuable performance time for the choir members. “ t is always a pleasure for our young people to be involved in professional performances, where they can learn a great deal. It’s particularly exciting when they can do this here in Bendigo, in front of their family, friends and peers” Mrs Broad said.

Established in 1993, The Australian Doctors Orchestra comprises close to 600 members and performs at least two concerts annually (one in a capital city and one in a regional location). Proceeds from each performance are donated to a selected charity, chosen from the many worthy charities which doctors traditionally work collaboratively with.

The upcoming performance will benefit The OTIS Foundation, a national breast cancer charity which was established in and continues its operations from Bendigo.

More than 80 performers are expected to take part in the Australian Doctors Orchestra performance at Ulumbarra Theatre on April 23. Tickets are available from Ulumbarra Theatre or online at http://www.thecapital.com.au/Whats_On/Australian_Doctors_Orchestra
