Murray Charity Meander

Thursday, March 3, 2016

Bendigo’s OTIS Foundation is set to be one of the big winners from this week’s Murray Meander – a charity event which sees 20 “tinnies” travelling the 850km journey from Echuca to Mildura.

The event, which has been running since 2006, departed Echuca on Saturday 27 February and will proceed along the river over eight days to Mildura, including overnight stops at Torrumbarry, Murrabit, Swan Hill, Tooleybuc, Boundry Bend, Robinvale, Mount Dispersion and Mildura.

The OTIS Foundation’s General Manager, Rachel Mason, said that the event is a very important fundraiser for charity, “Together with the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia we are one of the beneficiaries from the Murray Meander and over its 11 year history OTIS has received close to $600,000 from the event. This money is critical to enable us to continue providing retreat accommodation at no cost to people living with breast cancer and their families.” Mrs Mason said.

Event Co-ordinator, Dick Phillips, said that members of the Horizon Committee, who organise the annual event, use the event not only raise funds but also awareness, “While it is a very fun event with a serious fundraising side it is also about raising awareness of men’s health as well as the important work that The OTIS Foundation do.” said Mr Phillips.

“The event has raised more than $1.3million as it travels the length of the Murray River every three years. This year we are on the middle section of the fourth 2500km trip from the Alps to the sea.” commented Mr Phillips.

Mrs Mason added that for The OTIS Foundation it was also an important event to raise awareness and call on property owners to help establish new retreats “Most of our properties are donated by people who provide access to their holiday home or second property at selected times of the year, as we participate in the Murray Meander this year we are calling on generous individuals in the towns we pass through to consider if they either own a holiday home locally or know someone who does to come forward and assist OTIS to continue with its valuable work.”
