SA women to benefit from beachside stays

Aldinga Beach’s Munzberg family have become the most recent South Australians to offer their holiday home to those living with breast cancer.

Jan Munzberg recalls a chance meeting with a man from Bendigo as the moment she and her husband, David, recognised a link between the need for those facing the challenges of breast cancer and their two holiday homes.

“This young man asked us if we had heard of the OTIS Foundation, which provides retreats to women with breast cancer. Although we were not familiar with OTIS, we realised that our holiday houses are under-utilised during some periods of the year and what better way than to make them available for those needing such an opportunity?” Mrs Munzberg said.

“From our first contact we found OTIS so well organised that it drew us to want to become involved. Since then, working with OTIS staff, we have felt a part of a caring team working together for an important purpose.” commented Mrs Munzberg.

The two properties, both in Aldinga Beach, are a welcome addition to the OTIS Foundation which provides a network of 19 retreats across SA, NSW and Victoria. The properties are available at no charge for people living with breast cancer, offering the gift of time and space in an environment that allows the guest to relax, reconnect and heal with family, friends and supporters.

The OTIS Foundation’s Property Manager, Lynda Davis said that acquiring two new South Australian properties will assist in meeting increasing needs, “We know that as more people become aware of OTIS and what we provide, the demand for our properties will rise. Last year, we provided 44 South Australian stays to people living with breast cancer and we’re aiming to increase this three-fold over the coming five years.” Mrs Davis said.

“To have Jan and David as our newest property owners has been a real win for us, they are an amazingly generous couple and we are so thankful to have them on board. Ideally, we’d like to clone them!” Mrs Davis added.

“Our aim now is to find generous individuals, organisations or service clubs that would be interested in helping to support the running costs associated with cleaning and linen provision at these two retreats, which we estimate at $5,000 annually.” Mrs Davis commented.

Mrs Munzberg hopes that guests will use their stay as an opportunity to gather strength and perspective and be able to recharge their spirit. “For holiday house owners, OTIS gives an opportunity to be generous to a stranger on a journey with breast cancer at a time when life seems tough. To know that a guest can retreat to a peaceful and beautiful environment is reward in itself.” Mrs Munzberg reflected.
